The Temecula
Valley Woman’s Club presented $16,000 in scholarships to
Temecula and Murrieta high school graduates at a May 27 awards
ceremony in Temeku Hills.
“Hundreds of area students from the five local public high
schools were recommended by teachers and school counselors this
year for TVWC scholarship consideration,” said TVWC Scholarship
Chair, Tracy LaPaglia. “Reading through their submissions our
committee shared many smiles and shed a few tears before we
determined our final scholarship recipients.”
Recipients of the $1,000 scholarships are
Mark Hoffman, Eric Hoh,
and Stefanie Little (Chaparral); Victoria Hargis, Megan Thudium,
and Steven Weinrich (Great Oak); Amber DeSmith, Allison Freers,
and Raven Worthy (Murrieta Valley High School); Tera Avina,
Valerie Biswas, Samuel Brown, and Peter Minegar (Temecula Valley
High School); Ariel Mesec, Kevin Smyth, and Astinne Twamly
(Vista Murrieta High School).
Impressed by
the academic achievements and community service of Temecula
Valley High School student Valerie Biswas, the TVWC recommended
her for a scholarship to the De Anza District of California
Federation of Women’s Clubs. Biswas secured that award and the
TVWC provided her with a matching $1,000 scholarship. After
volunteering at Mother Teresa’s Orphanage in Calcutta, India,
Biswas has decided that her future lies in the area of medicine.
Murrieta Vista graduate, Astinne Twamley, is also eyeing a
career in medicine as a pediatric neuro-surgeon. Astinne has
been accepted into the prestigious Eleanor Roosevelt College at
UCSD and will major in Physiology and Neuroscience.
Steven Weinrich, a graduate of Great Oak High School’s
International Baccalaureate Programme, plans a career in the
field of prosthetics after earning his degree in
bio-engineering. “I could go on and on about each of
these kids,” continued LaPaglia, “They are so impressive. At a
time when some are complaining about today’s youth, we say look
around and see the truly wonderful kids in our Valley and be
proud.”
“The TVWC has been awarding academic scholarships to Valley high
school graduates since 1982,” explained Pat Farmer, TVWC
President. “Our Scholarship Program is funded each year by a
portion of the net proceeds from our annual Home Tour
fundraiser. In 1999 we expanded our program to provide an annual
scholarship to a local woman seeking to enhance her skills to
enter or re-enter the workforce by establishing a fund through
the Mt San Jacinto College Foundation. We are very committed to
education and honored to recognize the young scholars in the
Temecula Valley.”
Since 1980 the TVWC has donated in excess of $1.5
Million and contributed more than 875,000 hours of service to
the communities within the Temecula Valley. The TVWC has no paid
employees and is a 501c3 nonprofit supporting charities and
providing scholarships in the Temecula Valley. The public is
welcome at TVWC meetings held on the last Thursday of each month
at 10 AM in the Temeku Hills ballroom. Contact
